Sad Announcement - Moonbird is Closing....
I have some sad news to share with you. After an awful lot of thought and emotional turmoil, I’ve made a decision to close Moonbird.
After 5 years I‘ve been through many ups and downs. I have learnt more than I ever thought I would, and I’m a better person because of it. Moonbird was born from my dream to make luxurious sleepwear with people and planet in mind. What it became was completely consuming and more than I want to manage at this point in my life. I’ve proved to myself that I can do it and I realised that I don’t have anything left to prove. I don’t want to miss out on my life and I can always start it up again later, but for the moment I’m going to close it down.
Running a business means you never stop. I feel that I’ve become a workaholic because I can never switch off and be present. My kids complain that my phone is never a metre from my hand. Technology is an amazing thing. If I look back on what I have access to now in terms of technology, I’m amazed! I can do everything on my phone. Take payments, update stock, pay bills, answer emails. But it has all come at a cost. I stopped reading books, I find it hard to concentrate on anything for more than half an hour (or less!) at a time. This scattered concentration has led to overwhelm on more than one occasion and it’s now become a habit. My relationship with technology is most definitely love/hate. The last straw was recently realising that I was not being the role model for my kids that I want to be. I’m trying to teach them to live a low tech life while I’m high tech 24/7. They’re like a sponge and I have to choose what sort of liquid I want to fill them up with.
In the beginning, I didn’t have the connections or understanding, for how to be the ultimate in sustainability. I did the best I could and we’ve changed our practices as I gained the knowledge and the ability to do so. What I have learned over the years is that ordering lots of stock when you don’t know if people want to buy it, is wasteful and unsustainable. As a society we need to go back to a system of ‘make to order’. The next fashion business I consider will incorporate this, along with other best practices that I’m now aware of.
Fashion is an extremely time consuming business because your products (prints/fabric/styles) have to be designed from scratch each season, this is even before it arrives in Australia and has to be photographed, advertised and all the marketing campaigns.
I spent a lot of time focussing on accreditations. Our B Corp certification process was onerous and it took a lot of time collating all the information needed to prove our ethical credentials. This was an important process and I’m certainly now aware of the potential pitfalls, because of that journey.
Everything that Moonbird has taught me has been invaluable in terms of my personal and professional growth. I have learnt to trust my instincts, believe in myself, push my boundaries, face my fears and I have emerged a new human being. I’ve still got a long way to go, but today I’ve stopped to look around and to ‘own’ how far I’ve come.
The next chapter of my story is to share more of what I’ve learnt about the inner workings of the fashion industry, sustainability, climate change, the industry of overseas charities, overcoming anxiety, and much much more. So if you’d like to keep in touch and hear what I discover on this amazing journey I call life, you can follow me under my new name ‘Revolution Bird’. My facebook page is where I’ll be living for the time being:
It’s not all sad though, I’m feeling excited about embracing the next chapter. Moonbird might evolve into something new and be born again like a phoenix. Until then enjoy the storewide sale, stock up for the next few seasons, buy Christmas presents for your partner, your Mum, your best friend, your kids and while you’re there treat yourself and we’ll wrap it for you to save you another job.
To all our lovely customers (and I say ALL because we’ve never had a bad one!) We thank you for supporting us, sending us lovely messages and giving us great feedback. We couldn’t have done this without you, you’re all awesome!
